My places.sqlite is over 500M !
Run sqlite3 VACUUM, it shrink to 420M.
Then delete the hidden items as this instruction, find it still over 400M, disappointing....
Run sqlite3 VACUUM again, it shrink to 3M ! :)

great tip but ...

my places.sqlite is REALLY HUGE:

ls -1sSh places.sqlite
419M places.sqlite

what a happy pig! no problems with firefox performance because my raid 0 ( stripe=4) lvm2 hdd setup is fast like a star trek navy but ... i dont like to waste so much hdd space for nothing!

sqlite3 places.sqlite VACUUM shrink that pig to:

ls -1sSh places.sqlite
335M places.sqlite

hummm ... not so well ... time to bring up sqlitebrowser ... what i see here:

sqlite3 places.sqlite
SQLite version 3.6.14.2
Enter ".help" for instructions
Enter SQL statements terminated with a ";"
sqlite> select count(content) from moz_annos where content like 'data:image%';
8355
sqlite>

8355 images encoded in base64 like this:

"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAMQAAACICAYAAAC4PER8AAAg
AElEQVR4nOy9d3xc130viN33dpPYlkSqWLbzsnnJyyabOOvEyXNiWZEtO44t0aKoZlkS1U
11mqSoRlGiSIpVLOi9sHc0AkSb3mcATJ8BCBIkMJgOYDCD6ZCzf3z3j3PPuedegBT1kjzF
L/7jfObOvafdc3+/8+u/U5K72ofspBq5iW5kxruRCfQgdbEbmfHzSF08j8TIacyP9SA7dh"

anywhere between 10k and 64k data? i think, in my case, here is the real space hog ... how can get rid of this?

in places.sqlite, moz_annos table, content column, for what is used ""data:image/png;base64" records!? i don't know ... you?

Great tip, but unfortunately I have thousands of bookmarks (many stale, but it would take hours to find them), so my DB is still huge. Many I don't use, but I think I will find a way of taking the oldest to an HTML file - I do this as a quick link for my internet tablet.

(This hasn't been that much of a problem until I got a netbook with slow disk I/O, and sqlite apparently isn't doing caching; its journal file grows to nearly as big as the main file).

Hello,

Thanks for great tip, I'm on OS X and my Mac suffers the same problem. Now it's gone (almost, indeed). But it seems that in places.sqlite there is a table 'moz_historyvisits' that has n-to-1 relation to the table moz_places. It could be better if this table is taken care of ;-)

Ryan,

Thank you for the many cascading gems here.

I started my quest (à la Google) figuring I needed to Vacuum my Flock SQLite Databases to kill the sluggishness I was experiencing with my 10,000+ bookmarks. What a delight to find what I needed (plus even more tips) so soon and all here on your page.

All the best,

Steven (on the Mac)
